In the South Florida area, between pools, the Atlantic Ocean, and even washing machines, there are many scenarios where your keys could accidentally end up wet. Read on to learn some steps you can take if you drop your car keys in the water in areas such as Deerfield Beach, Boca Raton, Pompano Beach, Coral Springs, Boynton Beach and Delray Beach.

Act quickly! - Removing your keys from the water fast is crucial.

If your keys fall out and you lose your keys in a body of water, it’s crucial to act fast and remove them. Waiting can cause more problems to arise. The key fob will need to be dried out as soon as possible. The reasons to dry out your car key remote are:

  1. The key is an electronic device that won’t work if wet. Electricity and water don’t mix, so leaving the key fob wet can result with a rusted out product or one whose circuits are fried from corrosion after being left exposed for too long.

  2. The battery could also die. A dead key battery, or one that leaks and/or explodes will leave you with no key at all.

Take the necessary steps to dry out your key and get rid of any standing water.

The first thing you should do is remove the key fob battery and shake out any water. Leave the key fob resting with its button side facing down so that all of those pesky droplets can completely dry out. Once you have let it drain a few minutes, use an absorbent cloth to wipe away excess moisture from every corner or crevice.  If you have access to a hair dryer, this can help speed up the process.

After letting the car keys dry out, you will have to open up the key remote. To open the key, you will need a small screwdriver. The interior of your car’s remote might be held together with either flathead, phillips head, or another type of screw, depending on the make and model.

Wipe the inside of the key fob with a clean cloth. Make sure to carefully wipe the circuit board and battery off as well.  If the battery seems damaged, it is best to go ahead and replace it with a new battery at this time. If you see any battery acid residue, remove the battery, use rubbing alcohol and a cotton swap to remove the residue and let that area dry before installing new batteries.

Reassemble your key, give it a try and see if it's still functioning.

After completing these steps, now it’s time to reassemble the key and head to your car to see if the key is still functioning.  Test out each button to ensure none of them were damaged.  If one is not working, you may need to take apart the key fob and clean it more.  If the entire key fob has stopped working, then you will have to get a replacement key.
